Need advice about IQ test
Need advice about IQ test and doctor's response I was terminated from many jobs, so I went to a government hospital to check my IQ. They sent me to a psychiatrist. I told the doctor that I want to check my IQ. The doctor asked, “Why do you want an IQ test? If the IQ is low, we cannot increase it. So why test unnecessarily?” I am confused now. What is your opinion?

Hi Yes IQ is a relatively stable trait not prone to increments or decrements. That said, you can still get your IQ testing done only to know if it is in the average range or not. Once you know your score it’ll give u clarity about if a low IQ is the reason for you to lose jobs. If not, then it will rule out this reason. And you can seek other options. However, a clinical psychologist doesn’t go for only one single test of IQ, rather a whole battery of assessment is conducted based on a psychiatric evaluation. IQ score by itself does not say much about a person. It needs to be correlated by many other scores to have a full understanding of a person.

Hi, It's understandable to feel confused after the doctor's response. An IQ test can provide valuable insights into your cognitive strengths and weaknesses, which can help identify areas where you might need support or training. While it’s true that IQ cannot be increased significantly, knowing your IQ can help you understand yourself better, guide career choices, and identify whether you have any learning difficulties or mental health issues that may affect your performance. The doctor's concern might be based on the idea that an IQ score alone doesn't determine your potential or success. However, seeking an IQ test for self-awareness and personal development is valid. If you believe that understanding your cognitive abilities can help you improve your career or personal life, it's worth discussing this with your doctor further and explaining your reasons clearly.

It’s understandable that you feel confused after that response. An IQ test is not just about “increasing IQ.” It helps understand your cognitive strengths, learning style, attention, memory, and problem-solving pattern. Since you’ve been terminated from several jobs, an assessment can actually clarify whether the difficulties are due to attention issues (like ADHD), anxiety, stress, learning patterns, or workplace mismatch—many of which can be treated or improved. A psychologist can help you with a full evaluation and also provide CBT, mindfulness-based strategies, work-skills training, and emotional regulation tools to improve performance and confidence. So if you feel something is affecting your functioning, getting assessed is a sensible step—not unnecessary.

A particular psychiatrist may not be in the right frame of his mind... forget his advice. You can get your IQ test whenever and wherever you want. It's completely your choice. As far as your background is concerned, it seems that you might be having few psychological issues which are causing few problems at work place. It can be performance anxiety, phobia or even low attention, low cognition or low IQ. It needs to be ruled out with complete history and details and then customized test needs to be advised. It can be well treated with counseling sessions, psychometric analysis and homeopathic medicine effectively and without any side effects. It needs to be treated in a holistic approach for complete recovery. You need an expert Psychologist who is a good homeopathic physician.

You may consider undergoing an IQ assessment for better clarity regarding your cognitive functioning. A clinical psychologist is the appropriate professional to conduct this evaluation using standardized tools. Additionally, job termination can occur due to multiple factors, and IQ alone may not fully explain the situation. It is advisable to consult a psychologist to explore underlying reasons and gain a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges you may be facing in the workplace.

Hi, Your doctor is partly right that IQ is relatively stable and does not change drastically with age. However, that does NOT mean an IQ test is unnecessary. An IQ assessment is not only about “high or low” intelligence — it helps understand how you think, learn, process information, solve problems, and where your real difficulties lie. Since you are facing repeated job terminations and learning concerns, an IQ test along with cognitive assessment can actually be very useful for clarity and guidance.
Next Steps
You should consult a licensed Clinical Psychologist for a proper psychological and cognitive assessment, not just a basic opinion. This can help identify: • Learning difficulties • Attention issues (like ADHD) • Processing speed or memory problems • Work-related cognitive challenges This information can guide you toward the right type of job, training, or therapy.
Health Tips
• IQ does not define your worth or future success. • Many intelligent people struggle at work due to stress, anxiety, communication, or attention issues — not intelligence. • Focus on understanding your strengths and weaknesses, not just a number. • With the right guidance, skills can always be improved, even if IQ score stays the same.
