This is regarding my father. He has this habit of compulsively fabricating lies to win over a situation. He did have two episodes of depression, second episode was bad and did require medications for about 4-6 months. but the lying has been there since before the depressive episodes . When confronted he gets defensive and angry and never agrees to the lie. In front of his friends he would pass off as perfectly normal.

If the habit of lying had been present for a very long time, it is difficult to correct it at this age. Covert Behavioural Problems are most resistant to any form of treatment. However, if there is significant aggression/violence, it can be managed.
