Loose stools after taking mag glycinate
Current supplements: Magnesium glycinate 220mg (split from 440mg tablet) I am normally constipated and it doesn't bother me. Recently however I experienced the opposite, loose stools 1-2 times in one day with urgent stomach cramping (the kind where you need to run to the bathroom immediately).Could magnesium glycinate 200mg cause this even though it's considered the gentlest form? I cannot switch or replace my magnesium glycinate supplement. I want to understand what caused the sudden shift from my normal constipation to loose stools and urgent cramping, and what I can do to manage it without changing my supplement. What timing or dietary changes can I make to prevent this without stopping or replacing my supplement? And should I be concerned?

Yes, even magnesium glycinate — though considered the gentlest form — can cause loose stools and urgent cramping in some people, especially when taken on an empty stomach, in a larger dose than usual, or when the gut is reacting to it for the first time. Taking your supplement with food rather than on an empty stomach and splitting the dose into two smaller portions across the day can significantly reduce these GI effects. This kind of sudden shift is usually temporary and not dangerous, but if loose stools persist for more than a few days or worsen, it should be evaluated.
Next Steps
Try taking the supplement with meals and observe for a few days. Please consult me directly on Practo for a detailed evaluation if symptoms continue.

Yes, magnesium glycinate can still cause loose stools and cramping, even though it is usually gentler on the stomach than other magnesium forms. Possible reasons: Increased sensitivity to magnesium Taking it on an empty stomach Recent dietary changes, viral illness, or other supplements/medications The magnesium may have relieved your usual constipation and temporarily overshot into loose stools To reduce symptoms without changing the supplement: Take it with or after a meal, preferably dinner. Stay well hydrated. Avoid taking it together with large amounts of caffeine or other supplements that may upset the stomach. Consider splitting the dose further (if practical and approved by the product instructions). If the loose stools occurred only once or twice and have settled, it is usually not concerning. However, if diarrhea persists, becomes severe, is associated with blood, fever, weight loss, or signs of dehydration, you should consult a healthcare professional for evaluation.
