The best way to confirm vitamin D deficiency is by checking the serum 25(OH) D levels . Vitamin D Deficiency is very common and most of the times it can be asymptomatic. An Adult requires around 1000-2000 IU of cholecalciferol ( vitamin D) per day . Vitamin D is essentially for absorption of calcium .
Next Steps
If you have a documented vitamin D deficiency. Then the treatment dose is 60, 000 IU cholecalciferol once a week for for 8- 12 weeks . Then there has to be a gap of 4 weeks before you Check the vitamin D level again , if the levels of vitamin D has crossed 30 ng/ ml then one needs maintenance dose of 2000 IU per day or 60, 000 IU per month
