Keratoconus is progressive eye disease in which round cornea thins & begin to bulge into a cone like shape. This cone deflects the light as it enters the eye causing distorted vision. It may occur in one or both eyes & usually begins in growing age. Research suggests weakening of the corneal tissue leading to keratoconus may be due to imbalance in enzyme within cornea making it susceptible to free radical causing it to weaken  & bulge forward. In mild keratoconus, soft contact lens may help. Treatment for progressive keratoconus may include corneal cross-linking,custom soft contact lens,, permeable contact lens, scleral or semi scleral contact lens, hybrid contact lens& piggyback contact lens.  CXL( corneal collagen cross linking)is non-invasive procedure using topical application of B2 (Riboflavin)& ultra violet light to strengthen chemical bond in cornea effectively stabilising the eyes of children with keratoconus.  Last remedy to be considered is penetrating keratoplasty (p.k.) & even after p.k. one has to use contact lens or glass.Charges for keratoplasty varies from hospital ,it is being done free of charge in charitable hospital but quality of cornea must be good for better results.
