Is high fever really harmful
This question originates from the anxiety s that all parents live in when their kids get high fever We all think that high fever can cause brain damage so we pump in paracetamol or meftal or ibuprofen I want to understand the reality Is fever damaging ? If yes , after what temperature, And what can be the damage Many place its mentioned that fever helps in fighting the viruses and bacterias.. so isn't it unnecessary reducing the fever( using anytipyratics) lengthens the disease duration by letting virus and bacteria thrive in conducive environment .. I hope experienced paediatricians find interest in answering this and let's parents know the truth

Fever below 102 is not harmful as it is body's response to infectious agents. But with fever comes headache, bodyache and discomfort. Children especially will become very cranky, irritable, not want to eat, sleep, drink etc. So to reduce all these problems we reduce body temperature with medicine. Older children do not need medicines for fever less than 100.

Good question. Fever is the body's response to bacteria and viruses. Just like boiling water kills the organisms inside, the body fights the organisms by increasing temperature. Fever is not dangerous by itself at least till 102 F. Fevers do not cause brain damage. The only thing is febrile seizures ( fits) are known with fever. But these do not happen in all. Only some children are prone for it and even in them the fits can occur with no fever or low fever.
