Inner ear is very closely connected to the brain. Therefore inner ear infections do not occur very easily. An infection of the inner ear or labyrinth will present with serious manifestation. Such as severe dizziness, vomiting, high fever. Infections of the middle ear will usually cause a rupture of the ear drum if not controlled at early stage and you will present with ear discharge along with some pain. Infections of the outer ear will present with very severe ear pain, tenderness and swelling. Usually these clinical presentations are sufficient to diagnose these infections. An HRCT of the Temporal Bones is ordered if a cholesteatoma is suspected affecting the middle ear.
