Infection after ICD surgery
My father is 67 and diabetic he had bypass surgery 12 yrs back now due to low heart beat he got permonant pace maker but after 1 month there was puss in surgical area and now after 5 month of surgery it is still there. Current doctor giving antibiotics but old doctor suggested that off the pace maker for one day check heart beat and then remove pace maker. Please suggest.

It's quite complicated to manage cardiac implanted device related infections. Pus culture should help us in giving a targeted aggressive antibiotic course.But in many cases, infection would not subside as organisms flourish in non vascular implanted devices. Device interrogation can help in understanding what percentage is ur father dependent on pacemaker. Subsequently can plan accordingly.
