My 55-year-old mother has hypothyroidism (on 125mg thyroxine) and diabetes (120 before meals, 180 after). She’s also been experiencing blurry vision in the mornings, improving after breakfast. We checked her blood pressure for two days, and it was 155/95 and 160/98.
Her local doctor suggested she take medication if needed. Should we be concerned about her blood pressure now, or wait a few more days? If medication is required, which low-dose option would you recommend?

Hello,
Noting your mother's history of
- Hypothyroidism, on T. Thyroxine 125mcg
- Type 2 Diabetes, which appears under control wIth the medication she is taking, it is important for you to mention the exact medications and doses, and if she is taking them regularly.
First cause, of blurring vision in morning which improves after eating breakfast, can point to reduced sugar level in the morning, possibly due to more than required lowering blood sugars from either the medications for Diabetes she might be taking at night, due to the type and quantity of food she is taking the night before or if she is not consuming her medication regular as advised.
Second cause is the eleveted blood pressure, it is on the higher side, a BP of over approximately 160 above and 100 below recorded multiple times in a day, with any alarming symptoms is a sign of concern and requires you to immediately consult a nearby physician.
A BP recording of more than 130/ 90 recorded multiple times a day should be evaluated and appropriate medication must be started.
Next Steps
Kindly consult a general physician/ practioner, you can consult with me on practo, or message/ call me on (915093049 eight).
Health Tips
- If you have a BP apparatus available, kindly record and Note down BP atleast 4 to 5 times a day, anytime if there is a recording of more than 160 above or 100 below, repeat recording within 10 to 15 min again, of it is same or higher immediately visit a local physician/ practioner.
( Make sure you are recording the BP woth proper method, of higher record it even in the other arm).
- Taking proper diet, and going in of multiple frequent meals 6 times a day, rather than large meals altogether 3 times a day is better to reduce the changes of low blood glucose levels on between the meals. Ask her to immediately comsume sugar garanules or immediate spurce of glucose and visist a local physician.
- Note for any increased heart beat, increased sweating, sudden abdominal pain, confusion, giddiness, fainting, feel of shivering in arms of legs for low blood glucose.
If possible also try to record blood sugars with the glucometer machine when she is complaining of any of these.Anytime a blood glucose of less than 90 is to be noted, a level lower than this requires immediate visit to a local physician.
-Note for sudden headache, giddiness/ dizziness, confusion fainting, nausea or vomiting other different symptoms, recorded her BP immediately, any recording requires immediate visit to physician due to the concerned symptoms.
