Hello! It's great that you're taking help from a mental health professional. Medication alone may not help. Your son will need to take psychotherapy. Cognitive Hypnotherapy/ NLP works on the root cause, has long term effects on anxiety and related issues and the therapy duration is not long. You can visit one for the same.

Depends. Only medication might not help always. Your son needs to get rid of the dreaded habit and behavior therapy would help. Have you also taken him for psychotherapy from an experienced psychologist who expertises in behavior therapy? Also the root cause needs to be identified.  These facts can be further explored in psychotherapy sessions.
Next Steps
Behaviour Therapy from Clinical Psychologist.
