Hello Doctor,
Please read my situation carefully.
I took rabies booster shot from government medical. The syringe was already loaded before patient came. They kept vaccine loaded syringes in a open plastic container. One ice packet is also in that container. I saw 1 used syringe without needle also in that container.
So my vaccine loaded syringe and one used syringe with ice packet all are in a same container. The container is got moisture water due to ice packet. How much risk of HIV is here ??
If that used syringe is contaminated with hiv blood and mixed with the moisture and touch my syringe needle, how much risk ?
My concern is all were in a same container so i am very much stress now for this incident.
Don't know what i will do now. Please help. If i will take hiv pep now along with rabies vaccine does it also reduce the effect of rabies vaccine antibodies.
Please help.. the incidence was 4 days before.

Based on your description, the situation sounds anxiety-provoking but the actual risk of HIV transmission here is extremely low to negligible, because HIV does not survive well outside the body and transmission requires direct injection of fresh infected blood into the bloodstream, not indirect contact via moisture, container, or surface; even if a used syringe was present, simple proximity or water contamination does not create a realistic transmission route; also, PEP is effective only within 72 hours, and since it has already been ~4 days, it is generally not indicated now; importantly, taking PEP does not interfere with rabies vaccination, but in your case it is not required based on this exposure; what you can do for reassurance is a baseline HIV test now and repeat at 6 weeks/3 months, but medically this is a no-risk scenario, and your current distress seems more related to anxiety than actual infection risk.

Hi
I understand why this situation is causing you so much anxiety, but medically, the risk you are describing is extremely close to zero. HIV does not survive well outside the human body, especially in environmental conditions like moisture, temperature changes, and exposure in an open container. For transmission to occur, there must be direct entry of fresh infected blood into your bloodstream through a needle that has just been used on an infected person. The scenario you described—possible contact through moisture or indirect contamination—does not lead to HIV transmission.
Your level of distress is coming more from uncertainty and fear than from actual medical risk. Taking HIV PEP after 4 days is generally not recommended, as it is most effective within 72 hours, and in your case, it is not clinically indicated. It will also not interfere significantly with the rabies vaccine, but unnecessary medication can increase anxiety and side effects. What you need right now is reassurance and help managing this health anxiety pattern, where the mind keeps imagining worst-case scenarios. Take therapy. Risk of HIV in this scenario is extremely close to zero.
HIV does not survive well outside the body, especially in moisture/exposed conditions. Transmission requires direct fresh blood-to-blood exposure (like needle stick with infected blood)—not indirect contact via a container.
