Herpes 1&2 /Syphilis
Hello doctors! I am a 29-year-old male. About 4 years ago, I was diagnosed with Syphilis and Herpes simplex. I took treatment for a few months but then stopped. My symptoms had disappeared, and since then I have not taken any medication. Now, I am experiencing symptoms again mainly itching all over my body, including my face, but there are no visible rashes or marks. My question is Can I start taking Acyclovir on my own for herpes at this stage, or should I get tested and consult a doctor first?

Hello, I have carefully gone through the details shared by you. First of all, the symptoms you are describing do need proper evaluation, but there is no need to panic. Important point: General itching all over the body or face without any visible rash is usually not a typical symptom of herpes simplex. Similarly, syphilis also cannot be judged only on the basis of itching after such a long gap. So in your case, it would not be advisable to start Acyclovir on your own without proper assessment, because the current problem may or may not be related to the earlier infection. What could be happening? There are a few possibilities: • Sometimes herpes can remain silent and flare up, but usually it causes: • burning • pain • blisters / sores • irritation in genital area not only generalized body itching • Syphilis requires proper blood testing follow-up to know whether it was fully treated or not • Many times, itching like this may be due to: • allergy • fungal / skin irritation • stress / anxiety • liver-related or vitamin-related issues • medication or immunity-related causes What should you do now? I would strongly advise: 1) Do not self-medicate blindly Avoid starting Acyclovir or any STI medicine without confirmation. 2) Get proper testing done You may need evaluation such as: • VDRL / RPR • TPHA / Treponema test • If required, HSV testing • Basic clinical examination and history 3) Physical examination is important Because in sexually transmitted infections, history + examination + reports together give the correct diagnosis. My clinical suggestion: If you had syphilis and herpes in the past and treatment was left incomplete, then it is important to reassess properly now, especially before ignoring or masking symptoms with medicines. Final advice: Please consult personally with a qualified sexologist / venereologist and do not rely only on internet-based treatment. Once the exact cause is identified, treatment becomes much easier and more effective. For proper diagnosis and root-cause based treatment, kindly consult with all old reports and treatment history. Namastey Given your past history of Syphilis and Herpes simplex, it is important to approach this situation carefully. Herpes typically presents with localized symptoms such as blisters, burning, or pain in a specific area. Generalized itching all over the body without any visible lesions is not a typical presentation of herpes recurrence. Regarding Acyclovir, it is generally used when there are clear signs of an active herpes episode. Starting it on your own without confirming that your current symptoms are actually due to herpes may not be appropriate and could delay identification of the real cause. Also, since syphilis was treated incompletely in the past, it is important to ensure that there has been proper resolution, as untreated or partially treated infections can have long-term implications. Your current symptoms may or may not be related, so a proper clinical assessment is essential.
Next Steps
At this stage, it is advisable not to self-medicate and instead seek a professional evaluation. A doctor will assess your current symptoms, past treatment history, and guide you appropriately regarding whether any treatment is required at present. A structured and personalized consultation will help in identifying the exact cause of your symptoms and avoid unnecessary or incorrect treatment. Health Tips
Maintain good personal hygiene and avoid scratching, as it can irritate the skin further even if no rash is visible. Keep your skin well-moisturized and avoid harsh soaps or chemicals that may worsen itching. Focus on strengthening your overall immunity with proper sleep, balanced nutrition, and stress management, as both viral and skin-related conditions can flare with low immunity or stress. Most importantly, avoid anxiety or assumptions about recurrence—your current symptoms need proper understanding, and with the right guidance, they can be managed effectively. Thank You
