It is not due to dehydration. Babies have a different type of haemoglobin called foetal haemoglobin,this starts changing to adult haemoglobin and by the time the baby is a year old, the haemoglobin is of adult type. Foetal haemoglobin is not as efficient as adult haemoglobin in carrying oxygen and hence is in higher amounts.
