I had a glass ionomer filling done on my lower molar as I had an asymptomatic deep cavity. I am supposed to go back to the dentist for a composite filling to be placed over the gic restoration. May I please know the purpose of such a hybrid restoration? Can I leave the gic filling on the tooth without going for the composite over it since the tooth is giving me no trouble anyway?
Please help!

just go and remove the left over GIC filling and tell them to reclean and fill composite restoration on posterior teeth because it needs more strength for chewing hard foods and GIC cant support that.
The doctor must have explained you that if the caries are deep and the doctor is in doubt they give gic filling as temporary restoration and then after a week or so if the tooth is not troubling you they give composite restoration after removing gic restoration..
