My brother recently started therapy for feeling anxiety and overthinking for very long time.
His symptoms
- overthinking leading to mental exhaustion
- anxiety when triggered due to certain things
- mood shift sometimes
- difficulty in making decisions
- minimal OCD symptoms but visible only when anxious
Therapist suggested to visit psychiatrist. Psychiatrist suggested to start bupropion XL150 for 3 months.
Suggested approach by them- use medicine for some initial months and continue therapy and leave medicine once therapy is at advanced stage and also naturally positive habits are built
My brother is anxious about building medicine dependence? We don't want that at all
Also is it possible to stop using the medicine immediately after 3 months? What should be done? Should we take second opinion on the medicine and dosage and usage?

First of all these are not addictive medicines.
Second most people require treatment for about 6-9 months for anxiety disorder.
Thirdly these symptoms have chances of relapse in future after treatment whenever stressful conditions are there in life.
Fourthly the therapy your brother is taking should be practiced by him as a daily routine then it will become his second nature and he might not relapse in future.
Fifthly these medicines should not be stopped suddenly or started suddenly as both things if done suddenly may have side effects. Point to be noted is that not everyone suffers through the side effects of done suddenly but the risk is high for everyone. Hence gradual buildup and termination is advised.
Please consult your treating psychiatrist for any course that you are thinking to take. But these medicines have been taken by many patients world wide without development of any dependence over them.
And lastly as I tell many of my patients everything that we consume have side effects even Oxygen. But the doses of these medicines have been decided by multiple researches so as to have the maximum effects with minimal side effects.
Your psychiatrist is right about the approach to treatment. If you are aversive to medication try therapy alone. Bupron may not be the first choice but it is sometimes used for depression. Time duration of medications, abrupt stopping and all cannot be predicted or assured in the beginning. Some recover with 3 months treatment, some need it life long. These do not come under addiction category or dependence potential medications like sleeping pills, alcohol or narcotics. They normalise the neurotransmitter in your mind pathways.
