Erection Problem While Taking Flotral 10
I am 32 years old and I have been facing an enlarged prostate issue. I am currently taking Flotral 10 mg (Alfuzosin) tablets. I am planning to have a baby, but I am facing difficulty with erections. I can get an erection sometimes, but it is not hard or firm enough for intercourse. Could you please advise what might be causing this and what treatment or tests I should consider? Will Flotral/Alfuzosin affect my erection or fertility?

Alfuzosin usually doesn’t directly cause erectile dysfunction or significantly affect fertility. Since you’re planning conception and have ED, consult for evaluation and treatment

At 32, difficulty achieving or maintaining a sufficiently firm erection can have several causes, and it should not automatically be attributed to Flotral (alfuzosin). Alfuzosin is primarily used to improve urinary symptoms associated with prostate enlargement. Available clinical evidence suggests that alfuzosin generally has a relatively favourable sexual-function profile and may even improve sexual-function scores in some men with urinary symptoms. However, individual responses can differ. The prostate/urinary condition itself, along with factors such as sleep, stress, physical fitness, hormonal factors and vascular health, may contribute to erection difficulties. Regarding fertility, alfuzosin is not generally considered a medication that causes infertility, although sexual and ejaculatory effects can vary between individuals. It is therefore important not to stop your prescribed medicine abruptly without discussing it with the doctor managing your prostate condition.
Next Steps
Since you are planning conception and are experiencing persistent difficulty achieving adequate erection firmness, I would recommend a personal consultation with us to assess both your erectile function and prostate-related symptoms. The doctor can review whether alfuzosin is contributing in your particular case and decide whether any further evaluation is appropriate. Do not start or change any erectile-dysfunction treatment on your own, particularly while taking alfuzosin, because medicines used for erections can interact with blood-pressure–lowering drugs and may cause excessive lowering of blood pressure. Health Tips
Maintain regular physical activity, healthy body weight, adequate sleep and good stress management. Avoid smoking, excessive alcohol and recreational substances, as these can adversely affect erectile function and fertility. While trying for pregnancy, remember that erection quality and fertility are related but are not the same thing—a man can have erectile difficulties while still producing healthy sperm. A calm, non-performance-focused approach to intimacy can also be helpful. Thank you

Erectile difficulty can have multiple cause  including anxiety performance diabetes obesity low testosterone vascular factors and some medications. Alfuzosin generally does not significantly reduce erectile function or male fertility. The erectile problem should therefore be evaluated separately rather than assuming it is caused by alfuzosin.

Dear Practo User, Thank you for sharing your concerns. Difficulty achieving or maintaining a firm erection can have several possible causes, and it is important to evaluate the underlying reason rather than assuming that it is solely related to the prostate or medication. At 32, an enlarged prostate should be assessed carefully to determine the cause. Conditions such as prostatitis/inflammation, urinary obstruction, stress or performance anxiety, hormonal or metabolic factors, and other urological conditions can contribute to erection difficulties. Regarding Flotral (alfuzosin): it is primarily used to improve urinary symptoms by relaxing the muscles around the prostate and bladder. It is not generally considered a major cause of erectile dysfunction, although medicines in this class can sometimes cause sexual side effects, particularly changes in ejaculation. Do not stop or change the dose without consulting the doctor who prescribed it. Since you are planning for a baby, it would be appropriate to assess both sexual function and fertility. Depending on your history, evaluation may include: * Urine examination and, if indicated, urine culture * Ultrasound of the urinary system/prostate with post-void residual urine * Uroflowmetry * Blood sugar/HbA1c and lipid profile * Morning total testosterone and other hormones if clinically indicated * Semen analysis if you are actively trying to conceive * Assessment of erection quality, libido, stress and performance-related factors Treatment depends on the findings. Erectile dysfunction is often treatable, but the appropriate medication should be selected after considering your urinary symptoms, blood pressure, other medicines and fertility plans. Please consult a qualified urologist/sexual-medicine specialist before making any changes to Flotral. A detailed consultation can help determine whether the erection problem is related to the underlying condition, medication, psychological factors, or another medical cause. Dr. Fayyaz.
