Whenever my mother lies down (for sleep) after lunch / after dinner (after half and hour approx) , she gets dry throat with dry coughing.
No chest burn /no gas.
If she take water, throat gets moist and problem solved.
Again after sometime, it reappears. What may be reason and suggested treatment.

Hi.
Lying down immediately after meals causes the acid from the stomach to come to the throat and cause irritation, what is often referred as Laryngo-pharyngeal Reflux Disease (LPRD). Easiest solution to this is keeping a gap of atleast one and half hour to two hours gap between meals and lying down. Also, small frequent meals, i.e small meal every 3-4 hours, and not staying hungry for too long at a stretch, helps. If these measures don't give relief, a small course of antacids can help. Plz visit an ENT specialist online/In-person for detailed evaluation and treatment.

Thanks for your query.I have gone through your presentation.Usually the symptoms you are saying may be because of several factors in this age group. Most likely causes are as follows already post menopausal (dry throat),lax lower oesophageal sphincter leading to LPRD(dry coughing),Sleep apnoea syndrome leading to mouth breathing both dry throat and dry coughing) or else if any post nasal drip ( dry coughing) is there or not or if too long uvula (dry coughing)etc etc .so I would suggest her to sleep with headed up and in right or left lateral position and atleast after 2 hrs of taking dinner.Even then it is persisting I would request to consult an ENT specialist of your choice immediately thereafter online video consultation or in clinic consultation as per your convenience.Thanking you.
