Saliva is a primary mode of transmission for the rabies virus. The virus is typically present in the saliva of an infected animal, such as a rabid dog, and is most commonly transmitted through a bite. However, rabies can also be transmitted through other bodily fluids, such as tears, urine, and nervous tissue, although the risk of transmission through these fluids is lower than through saliva. It's important to note that rabies is a serious and almost universally fatal viral infection, so if you suspect you've been exposed to rabies, it's critical to seek immediate medical attention. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which includes a series of rabies vaccinations and, in some cases, rabies immune globulin, can be effective in preventing the virus from progressing if administered promptly after potential exposure.
