Discoid Lupus Erythematosis
I noticed a hyperpigmented patch with hair loss on my scalp. My doctor asked to take a biopsy and the result was suggestive of dle. I just have only one lesion in the scalp. Can this one lesion confirm the diagnosis of dle? Is there chance for me to get more lesions ? I have given my blood sample for ANA analysis. I did not have any fever, my blood counts and esr were normal.

Hi. Your doubts are very genuine. So let me take them one by one. 1. DLE can come as a single patch/plaque and biopsy of that alone is sufficient to confirm. 2. YES this could be a recurrent problem and can cause scarring - therefore its better you take treatment - even as a preventive measure to avoid worsening of the problem. 3. YES, ANA must be done - its better if its negative; if it is positive, there may be other tests that may be needed which the doctor will let you know accordingly. 4. Counts and ESR can be normal - so thats good for you. IF its pure DLE without and SLE (systemic involvement) - then its a better form of the disorder. However, you need not worry since it is a treatable condition. Hope this helps. Warm regards, Dr Govind S Mittal, Therapeia Skin Hair and ENT Centre, Bengaluru. (bengalurudermatologist on instagram)
