He needs to be taken to a psychiatrist where the diagnosis can be confirmed and treatment started accordingly. Depression in old age is pretty common and can increase the burden of distress for the patient as well as for the family. The sooner the treatment starts, the better.

Feeling low, having crying spells, sleep and appetite disturbances, and difficulty in concentration and attention are some of the signs of Depression. Consult a Psychiatrist for a detailed assessment. It is likely with medication and counselings the symptoms will improve. If he is feeling suicidal or hopeless consult a Psychiatrist immediately.
