The criteria for diagnosis of diabetes in children is the same as that for adults which is checking the fasting blood sugar, after food blood sugar and perhaps doing a glucose tolerance test. Yes, any child having diabetes can absolutely live a normal life and can participate in physical activities and sports as long as the diabetes is well managed by a well qualified diabetologist and in particular by someone who is trained to manage diabetes in sports. With regards to medication it depends on the type of the diabetes. Most children have TypeI diabetes and will need Insulin right from day1. If they have TypeII diabetes then management is same as that of adults.
