For a short time one can use it to supress cough. But should not be used for a long time and frequently.

It is useful for a short duration. It can cause sedation, constipation.  It also suppresses cough effectively,  hence can be used in cough for a short time if needed.

Dextromethorphan inhibits the central cough region in the brain (to put it in understandable terms) so it is good if used for a short duration of time. However, if you use it for a productive cough then since the natural cough clearing mechanism  is inhibited, there can be pooling of secretions in your respiratory tract and it could lead to breathing difficulties.
Next Steps
You could combine dextromethorphan containing syrup with a mucolytic for example ascoril-D. Another option is to pick an alternative syrup that does not contain dextromethorphan. For more suggestions you can consult with me on this application itself.
