It is useful for a short duration. It can cause sedation, constipation. It also suppresses cough effectively, hence can be used in cough for a short time if needed.
Dextromethorphan inhibits the central cough region in the brain (to put it in understandable terms) so it is good if used for a short duration of time. However, if you use it for a productive cough then since the natural cough clearing mechanism is inhibited, there can be pooling of secretions in your respiratory tract and it could lead to breathing difficulties.
