Depression
Hi. I've recently consulted a psychiatrist for my depression issue, and he recommended that i take cita s plus tablets which are antidepressants of the SSRI category. I would like to know if this medication is safe for long term use? Is it addictive or habit firming? there a better safer and milder medicine? I would also like to know if its the best approach to consult a psychiatrist or should i be consulting a counselling psychologist? Is medication the right way to treat depression or should I go for therapy? Please clarify my confusion... I am seeking help after being depressed for almost a year. It has had a huge negative effect on my life and mental condition. Please reply soon.

Many psychiatrists are very well aware that medication is not permanent treatment for depression. However they always find themselves having conflict of interest when it comes to Therapy in two ways. One is either some people not refer to clinical psychologist whenever it is required and the other conflict is they themselves do Therapy in which they are not extensively trained as much as clinical psychologists. As a result, patient either is at loss of treatment or looses hope on his condition. My sincere advise to you would be, evidence based treatment suggest that unless the depression is purely organically based, all other kinds of depressions can be tested partly medication and mostly therapy. So I would suggest you to seek Therapy side by side and start seeing a clinical psychologist, not necessarily me but any RCI licensed clinical psychologist preferably trained in NIMHANS in your area and see the results for yourselves.

Antidepressants take around 2-3 weeks to start acting. Taken under guidance of dr they are not addictive. Best is to combine medication with psychotherapy. Dosages need to be adjusted from time to time based in response. Consult psychiatrist regularly.
