If the decay extends very deep so as there is a doubt if it has entered the pulp of tooth, a waiting period is usually advised. In case you have symptoms of pain or swelling within this time, you will be advised for a root canal treatment of that teeth. If no pain,  all well and good, the temporary teeth can be made into a permanent restoration.
