My pre term (32 weeks) baby is 6months now and weighs 5.5kg(birth wt=1.5kg) . His head circumference is 43cm now.. doctor suggested to go for Cranial Ultrasound. Pls tell why is it required? Are the parameters not normal? Is this ultrasound for babies safe? He is otherwise Active, plays and eats well..

Hi, The baby's head circumference is as expected. You have not shown any reason to suspect any delay in the developmental milestones. So, I am not sure about the need for cranial ultrasound. USG cranium is used to see if there is excess water accumulating inside. Also to  see any bleeding inside the brain. For rest of the brain imaging MRI is used. Although cranium USG is a safe scan, it is not a routine study at 5-6 months of age due to very small skull opening in the head. If at all one needs to look at the brain , then MRI scan is the investigation of choice . The decision to do neuroimaging can only be taken after a thorough neurological assessment.
