You may use glycerine suppositories if available for the current episode. If unsuccessful take him to a healthcare facility to give enema to relieve his hard stool. You can use laxatives like lactulose , but needs to use a longer time to regularise his stool for long term benefit. But there is nothing like diet modification with more fibre and water which can help you do away with drugs in the long run.
