Why do hair fall during chemotherapy?
Is there any reason?
Is it indicates the effectiveness or any other reason?
Few are losing hair completely in 1 cycle and few took 2-3 cycles?
Is it depends on stage of the cancer?
Plz educate us..

I am Thejeswar. I am a Medical oncologist.
1. Chemotherapy is a form of systemic therapy. It acts in a non-specific way, which means it will affect both rapidly dividing normal cells and abnormal cells (cancer cells). Hair follicles are rapidly dividing cells and hence will be affected by chemotherapy resulting in hair loss which is temporary. It indicates that chemotherapy is doing some work in our body. We cannot correlate with effectiveness.
2. There will be individual-to-individual tolerance and metabolism differences resulting in time differences for alopecia from the start of chemotherapy
3. It depends on the type of chemotherapy, not on the stage of cancer.
