Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months of age. Then if mother is able to provide breast feeds, she should be encouraged to feed till 2 years of age. After six months of age babies need for calories and protein and vitamins are not completely met with exclusive breast feeds. Research has shown that children who are breast fed are better at warding off the common diseases like respiratory illnesses and intestinal problems. Moreover, their immune system matures early and onset of allergies also is avoided.  Weaning should start with 6 months of age. Introduce one food (eg: either rice or dal water) item per day. This way we come to know presence of any food allergies or intolerance to particular food item. Please do not give any sort of prelacteals and gripe water. ( Janam ghutti etc). Introduce eggs bit later around 8-9 months of age.
