After wrist fracture surgery, some stiffness and swelling can occur, but being unable to fully straighten/open the fingers with severe pain should be examined rather than treated as routine stiffness. Causes can include significant postoperative stiffness, tendon adhesions or tendon dysfunction, nerve irritation, or less commonly a pain syndrome such as CRPS. The exact cause cannot be determined without examining the hand and reviewing the surgery/X-rays.
Next Steps
Please see your operating orthopaedic surgeon soon. They should check finger tendon function, nerve function, swelling and wrist position. Further X-rays or other tests may be required. Hand physiotherapy can be very useful, but the exercise program should be started/modified after the surgeon confirms that the fracture fixation and tendons are safe.
Health Tips
Do not forcefully stretch the fingers through severe pain. Seek urgent medical attention if there is rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain even at rest, numbness, fingers becoming pale/blue/cold, fever, wound discharge, or sudden complete loss of finger movement.
