Can hypnotherapy help "unstuck" me?
I'm a life sciences PhD student. After experiencing a downward spiral 3 years ago, I underwent counseling & CBT for over a year. I now am aware of my anxiety triggers & can deal with them. However, I keep falling back and I do not feel like myself. With the 6th year of PhD almost over, I am nowhere close to finishing. Yet, I do not feel the urgency. There's disinterest, no joy or enthusiasm. Only reaction is anxiety, excessive crying sometimes. I'm dragging through the degree I was passionate about, having left a govt job to pursue research. Even enjoyable activities I don't pursue anymore. I play everything down. Keep it low. Don't do much. Even when people say I'm really good at something, I don't pursue it further, e.g. writing and dancing. I cannot follow any routine or discipline. So CBT also couldn't help me beyond a point. There's no discipline. Can sleep half the Day. Affects work, health. I know what to do but can't bring myself to do it as if I'm stuck. Can hypnotherapy help?

According to you you have anxiety problem. You took counselling and CBT to overcome your problem. But not benefitted fully. Hypnotherapy also not going to work with you. There are enough scientific evidence regarding hypnotherapy and anxiety. What is going to work well with you is a holistic approach combined with relaxation techniques, cognitive behaviour therapy,and enlightenment regarding life.

Hi... Hypnotherapy is a treatment methodology and it may help bring you some relief and realizations, but if you are expecting a complete recovery using hypnotherapy, it's hard to estimate. Also, the way you have explained it, suggest early signs and symptoms of depression. The primary trigger of your present issues is basically your struggle with your career (PhD), things you left in the past for it and a negative anticipation of your future, which is causing debilitating anxiety, crying, loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities, etc. CBT, Hypnotherapy, Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic, Existential/Logo Therapy are just different approaches to address various psychological issues. Don't make conclusions about a treatment methodology based on your individual experience with a particular Psychologist/Psychotherapist.
Next Steps
Do not discontinue treatment. Changing the Therapist/Professional is Okay, but dropping the Treatment is not Okay.

Hello, Glad to know that you have sought help earlier and you are aware about your triggers and know how to deal with your anxiety.Phd is  a degree of continuous efforts which you are giving from past 5years and the ending years of phd can be very stressful for the scholar,the feeling of just getting it completed and the exhaustion are the two feelings a scholar is stuck into,plus you have left government job to pursue your research that is creating much more pressure.Sometimes when the stress is prolonged nothing seems to work and demotivation peeps in.I would suggest you to resume psychotherapy wherein you will prioritise with your therapist what needs to worked on first.
