Hi, my brother is having a CT scan of the heart because he was advised the same due to his chest pain. However, he is worried because there are reports of the dye causing damage to the kidneys. This is the first time he is having a CT scan. Can a CT scan cause any minor or serious damage to the kidneys? Are there any precautions to be taken?

Contrast given for CT can be nephrotoxic. Its not the contrast alone but also the clinical illness patient is having like heart failure diabetes which increases the risk.
Dose , route and type of contrast also matters.
Given the current practices and precautions, contrast associated kidney injury is prevented in most of the cases.
Also if contrast study can be life saving for example in some heart , lung or mesenteric disease, then saving life is more important than kidneys.
