Blue sclera
Hi My daughter is 22months old. She is having blue sclera. A slight tint of bluish color can be seen in her eyes. I have seen this from last 1month. Is this a matter of concern? What can I do for this ?

Hello, I understand your concern The sclera is normally white. A blue or bluish tinge The sclera is normally white. A blue or bluish tinge happens when the scleral tissue is thin, allowing the underlying dark pigmented layer (choroid) to show through. In toddlers, this can be normal, but sometimes it may point to an underlying condition. Causes include: normal variant, iron deficiency anemia, osteogenesis imperfecta, connective tissue disorders
Next Steps
Child should be evaluated by a pediatrician and possibly a pediatric ophthalmologist or geneticist Look for signs of: Bone fragility, Delayed milestones, Poor weight gain Basic tests like CBC + iron studies (for anemia) Serum calcium, vitamin D, ALP (for bone health) X-rays if fractures are suspected
Health Tips
Blue sclera is sometimes seen in healthy children. But to be sure it’s not a sign of weak bones or anemia, we recommend a proper evaluation. Most causes are treatable once identified.

If your daughter is otherwise active, growing well, has no history of fractures or weakness, and development is normal, this may just be a benign finding. Still, a pediatric consultation is advisable to rule out conditions like iron deficiency or early signs of bone disorders.
Next Steps
Get a Pediatric Evaluation: A physical examination and history will help rule out systemic causes.

It can be due to a natural variant, some nutritional deficiencies or congenital conditions. An image to see the extent would definitely help.

How is your daughter’s growth and milestones? If all is well and only the sclera is looking blue it may be just a trait suggesting a benign condition. There are conditions related to major diseases of the bones and connective tissue which are associated with a blue sclera but then the child will have symptoms like repeated fractures of bones, a compromised growth and abnormal looks. So I assume these are not present because they will have been picked up by now! A blue sclera is because of a thinning of sclera causing the underlying blood vessels colour to reflect through. It can be genetic/ familial trait too. If not, check for iron deficiency anemia in the child Also, if there is sudden change in vision or eye symptoms like pain, discharge you need to get the eyes checked
Next Steps
Check for iron deficiency anemia
Health Tips
Be watchful if sudden change of vision, eye pain, eye discharge is there - get an ophthalmologist’s check
