Birth control issue
Ive been taking the Xulane birth control patch to regulate my Endometeriosis, PCOS, etc. It has helped alot. Ive been taking it for 6-7 years atlesdt. Im abroad and they dont sell the patch near me. So i got a new BC pill called Intimacy 3 tablet, in India as a substitute. A gynecologist I dont know made this recommendation. It contains Desogestrel and Ethinylestradiol. Over the last week Ive only taken it 3 times. Im unable to take it everyday. I probably wont have access to my regular birth control for 1-2 weeks. What should I do? Is it better to take some BC for regulation, even if inconsistently or simply wait until i can use the patch again. Ive had bad luck with pills in the patch and fear sever mood changes etc. and side effects. My current gynecologist whose familiar with my case is unavailable to me. What should i do? Thanks!

Hello, I completely understand how stressful it is to be without your regular medication while traveling, especially when you have had a stable routine for so many years. Please don't worry, we can manage this short gap safely. To answer your question directly: Please stop taking the Intimacy 3 pills immediately. It is much better to take nothing than to take birth control inconsistently. Here is why you should stop: Hormonal Rollercoaster: Taking a birth control pill only 3 times a week causes rapid spikes and sudden drops in your hormone levels. This will actually trigger the severe mood swings and side effects you are trying to avoid. Ineffectiveness: Inconsistent dosing will not suppress your Endometriosis or PCOS symptoms, and it will guarantee irregular breakthrough bleeding. What to do for the next 1-2 weeks: It is much easier on your body to simply take a complete break until you get your patches back. Expect a Bleed: You will likely experience a "withdrawal bleed" (similar to a period) within the next few days of stopping the pills. This is completely normal as your hormone levels drop. Symptom Management: If you experience any Endometriosis cramping during this gap, you can use over-the-counter pain relievers like Ibuprofen or a heating pad. Restarting Xulane: As soon as you have your Xulane patches again, simply apply a new patch to start a fresh cycle. Protection: If you are sexually active, you must use backup protection (like condoms) immediately and continue using them for the first 7 days after you restart your patch.
Next Steps
Take a deep breath and enjoy the rest of your trip. A 1-to-2-week gap is a short window, and your body will re-regulate once you are back on your normal patch routine.
