Anemia in pregnancy
I extend my heartfelt admiration to all the dedicated doctors for their relentless service. I am concerned about my wife who is 21 weeks pregnant. She has haemoglobin level mostly around 11.5. All usg scans have been normal. Fetal health is good as per scans. quadruple test, glucose tolerance, RFT, LFT, and all other essential blood tests have been done, nothing significant found. Gynaecologist prescribed her Sharkoferrol syrup and Shelcal CT tablet. My question is should we worry about her hemoglobin level? Her BP is always around 100/60.  Apart from this she always has a very bad constipation which do not respond to psyllium husk or fiber rich foods. On average it takes 4 days for her to pass the stool... n stool becomes hard, lumpy and painful to pass. Kindly take some time to explain. Do not advise to consult straightaway.🙏

Haemoglobin is fine. Change her iron tablet to a preparation that contains a stool softener like softeron. Ask her to take duphalac syrup for constipation

11.5 Hb is not alarmingly low. Please regularly take the prescribed syrup and tablet. Hb measurements are colorimetric and not very precise. This is more towards normal. Please repeat the blood counts after a month. Ensure to have a lot of spinach and leafy vegetables. If you are non vegetarian- great idea to take one whole egg everyday, chicken and red meat 2-3 times a week. Avoid tea with food ; it reduces the absorption of iron. If the constipation persists , we can prescribe tablets. Overall the pregnancy picture looks healthy. Please contact if there are questions
