Namaskaram,
TMD is the name for a group of conditions that are characterized by pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), where the jaw bone (mandible) meets the temporal bone (a part of the skull.) In fact, the condition is often incorrectly called âTMJâ â but TMJ actually refers to the joint itself. Everyone has two of them, one left and one right, but not everyone has TMD. Your dentist's treatment recommendations will depend on his or her findings in your specific case. What really is the cause of the pain? Simply put, the surrounding structures in the jaw âsystemâ including, the teeth, air sinuses, even neck and back muscles share nerves with these joint structures so that when a problem arises in anyone of them may be evident. The nerves react by telling you something in the system is wrong, and they let you know by saying âpain.âToday, we recognize that more conservative therapies, like massage or wearing a night guard, are effective in most cases.Severe cases will require more complex forms of professional care, which may include minor procedures inside the joint such as cortisone injections or botox or lavage (flushing) of the joint.
