There's this person suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder. Once he visited a psychiatrist, he gave some prescription and also explained that it's got many side effects. This guy thought that he'll control from repeating things and will also improve his behaviour. This approximately happened a year ago. But I find no change in him. In fact it's increasing day by day. He is not ready to visit the doctor. He feels really low depressed n he has lost all his interest in his life. He repeats things until it does not provide him satisfaction. Please provide me with some help. Please please please help me please...

To control the symptoms of moderate to severe OCD it is important to combine treatment with drugs and cognitive and behavioural therapy. All medicines theoretically have side effects but everyone need not get it.Bearing in mind any risks, suitable medicines can be chosen.

Dear sir, Kind of you to be searching for a solution to someone else's problem. First of all, in OCD, doing behaviors again and again only worsens the disease as seen in this case. GOOD NEWS is that through proper medications and psychotherapy, it is a controllable condition and well treated patients are also able to perform well. BUT, leaving OCD untreated can lead to depression as well as psychosis. Also, as time passes by, the mentioned person will gradually stop accepting it as a problem and that will make it difficult to engage him in treatment. Hence, my advice is please take your friend to a psychiatrist at the earliest and get him treated comprehensively. Pls feel free to contact me for private consultation. Regards!

Hello I can understand your situation, but you too will have to acknowledge the fact that psychiatric illnesses have a strong biological underpinning and hence until that is corrected, there may not be a complete relief in symptoms. So, the best way to move ahead would be to consult a psychiatrist and start him on a combination of medication & cognitive behavior therapy( therapy solely won't be the best option for him as your description suggests a moderate to severe episode). Also, most medications and I am including here non psychiatric medicine as well, will have some side effect profile, which may or may not manifest in every individual. Howsoever, your friends refusal for medication appears to stem not from apprehension of side effects, but the inability to acknowledge his symptoms as an illness and equating them to a lack of resilience & strength on his part.
Next Steps
The best way to tackle this would be to convince him for psychiatric consultation and envision it as a support to help him tide over the illness than as a sign of weakness in him. hope this helps, good luck!
