Hello Amalgam( an by extension mercury ) removal and disposal is a challenge and SMART technique is one method to handle it. Having said that it poses more risk to the clinic and clinic staff than to patient as the exposure is not for a long duration. Most clinic which have the modern equipment and complying with BMW guidelines have adequate means to dispose off amalgam

SMART is safe amalgam removal technique. It involves the use of : Masks, gowns and protective covering for the safety of the dental professional and the patient. High volumes of suction to remove particles. Dental rubber dam to isolate the tooth. Using a activated charcoal rinse to remove traces of mercury. Air purification systems like hepa filter so that you don't inhale the mercury vapour. Oxygen supply. Nowadays most clinics use most of the  above mentioned methods for every procedure. Kindly consult your dentist about the same before undergoing amalgam removal.
