Risks from being cut by Raw poultry bone

2025-05-21 07:40:12
My wife got slightly cut by raw poultry bone while doing marination, immediately washed the wound with handwash & applied Dettol. Please let me know if any other measures need to be taken ? She took T.T injection 8 months back. Is there any chance of tetanus or rabies ? Thank you for any valuable suggestion.

Unlikely, don't worry. No need for further TT injection.

Steps Already Taken — Excellent First Aid: 1. Immediate washing with soap/handwash – Very effective for removing surface pathogens. 2. Application of Dettol – Good antiseptic coverage. 3. Tetanus Toxoid (TT) 8 months ago – She is currently protected; no booster is needed unless the wound becomes severe or very dirty. Risk Assessment: 1. Tetanus Risk: • Poultry bones are not typically associated with Clostridium tetani unless heavily contaminated with soil or feces. • Since she had a TT injection within 5 years and the wound is minor, tetanus risk is extremely low. 2. Rabies Risk: • Rabies does not spread via poultry or poultry bones. It is a zoonotic virus from mammals (primarily dogs, bats, foxes). • No rabies risk in this case. No PEP or vaccine required.
Next Steps
• Monitor the wound for signs of infection: increasing redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or fever. • Keep it clean and dry. Apply a topical antibiotic ointment (like mupirocin or fusidic acid) if available. • Cover with a sterile bandage if needed. • If pain/swelling increases or pus forms, consult a physician. Oral antibiotics may be needed in such cases.
