Managing bilateral
kidney stones (stones in both kidneys) in a patient with a spinal cord injury requires a highly coordinated surgical approach. Most urologists prefer minimally invasive procedures like PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) or RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery). Whether both sides can be cleared in a single operation depends entirely on the total stone load (size and number) and your overall clinical stability during the procedure
Next Steps
Pre-Surgical Workup: Expect tests like KFT (
Kidney Function Test) and a Urine Culture to ensure there is no active infection before the surgery.
Hospital Stay: For RIRS, the stay is usually 1–2 days. For PCNL, it might be 2–4 days. Since you have a spinal cord history, a slightly longer stay might be needed for monitoring.
BP Monitoring: Keep a log of your BP twice daily for the next 3 days. This will help the anesthesiologist decide if any pre-op BP medication is needed
