Give a light snack and small sips of water before starting - neither an empty stomach nor a heavy oily meal - and avoid milk, fried food and strong smells in the car. Break a 5 hour journey into two or three stops so she can walk in fresh air, and carry a small towel, water and a spare set of clothes. If she still vomits badly on every journey, medication is possible but must be prescribed by her paediatrician after checking her weight, because dosing in a 14 kg child has to be exact - the usual choice is promethazine syrup or dimenhydrinate given 30-60 minutes before the journey, and it will make her sleepy. Please do not give her adult tablets, domperidone or ondansetron on your own, and do not use scopolamine patches at this age. Get her seen by a doctor rather than travelling if she has vomiting with fever, headache, vomiting even when not travelling, or unsteadiness while walking, as that is not simple motion sickness.
