I quit SSRI last month, and my bp, sugar and pulse was normal too, today I checked BP with a doctor it was 145/95, no heart related symptoms he said to maintain life style, but pulse reached 105, can I take propranolol or atenolol to lower heart rate?

The possible causes may include early Hypertension, Anxiety, and stress. Stopping your SSRI (antidepressant) recently may also contribute to these symptoms. Lifestyle factors such as excessive caffeine intake, sleep disturbances, and physical inactivity can further worsen the condition. You should visit our clinic for a detailed evaluation. We will take a complete history and perform a thorough physical examination. Based on your condition, we will advise investigations such as CBC, LFT, KFT, thyroid profile, and ECG. After reviewing the reports, we will guide you regarding appropriate medications and necessary lifestyle modifications

Hello. I have reviewed your concerns regarding your elevated heart rate and blood pressure. It is important to address these readings, especially as you have recently transitioned off an SSRI. However, starting medications like Propranolol or Atenolol on your own is not recommended. Understanding Your Readings Heart Rate (105 bpm): A resting heart rate above 100 bpm is termed tachycardia. While this can be a physical response to stress or anxiety, it can also be a rebound effect sometimes seen after stopping certain medications. Blood Pressure (145/95 mmHg): This reading is considered Stage 2 Hypertension. While a single high reading at a doctor's office can sometimes be due to "white coat hypertension," it requires consistent monitoring to determine if it is a sustained issue. Why You Should Not Self-Medicate with Beta-Blockers: Beta-blockers like Propranolol and Atenolol affect the heart and lungs significantly. They can mask underlying conditions or cause adverse effects if you have undiagnosed issues like asthma or specific heart rhythm disturbances. Recommended Next Steps Consult Your Prescribing Physician: Discuss your symptoms with the doctor who managed your SSRI. They can determine if these fluctuations are related to "discontinuation syndrome" or a separate emerging issue. Home Monitoring: Keep a log of your blood pressure and pulse twice daily (morning and evening) for the next 5 days. This data is much more valuable for your doctor than a single "one-off" reading. Lifestyle Adjustments: Limit caffeine intake, avoid nicotine intake. They significantly raise both heart rate and blood pressure. Practice deep-breathing exercises or mindfulness to see if the heart rate stabilizes during periods of rest.

Don’t start propranolol or atenolol on your own. Monitor for a few days, cut caffeine, rest well. If pulse stays more than 100 at rest or symptoms appear, get evaluated. You can book a consultation.

Yes you can take propranolol 10mg one daily in morning. Regarding b.p it is slightly high. Cut down salt and fats in your diet. Exercise regularly, avoid alcohol and rest adequately. Get thyroid profile done and share results. . Repeat b.p check after a month.

Hi. I would suggest to not start any medicines just based on one reading. Heart rate can increase due to multiple factors. Suggested is that you monitor it for a few days and record it to look for any patterns or triggers.

quite common to experience fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate (pulse) for several weeks after discontinuing an SSRI medication. A single reading of 145/95 mmHg and a pulse of 105 bpm is considered borderline high but does not immediately confirm chronic hypertension. These spikes are often linked to 'discontinuation syndrome' or a temporary rebound of anxiety following the withdrawal of the medication. Starting heart-rate-lowering drugs like Propropanolol or Atenolol without a comprehensive cardiovascular evaluation is not the recommended first step
Health Tips
Do not start beta-blockers (Propropanolol/Atenolol) on your own, as these medications require professional supervision to monitor your baseline heart rate. For a detailed clinical evaluation, personalized medicine prescription, and direct follow-up, you can consult me directly through my profile."
