Having pain in shoulders

2020-07-02 04:34:15
My mother is having pain in her left shoulders. She also has this problem that her left hand ring finger is in bent position. There's no pain in her finger. It usually bent when she wash her face or when she raises her hand. My mother says that her shoulder pain is because of the bra strap and now she don't put her strap on. But now the pain has become severe because she was doing household chores. Right now since 1 week we are giving her heat therapy by keeping hot water bag on her shoulders. But she is not able to move her hands. So kindly suggest is there anything serious and what we can do.

Hello, The pain could be because of frozen shoulder or radiating pain due to neck involvement. Proper assessment needs to be done to diagnose the exact cause. 1. Does she have a history of neck pain/spondylosis? 2. Does she has diabetes? 3. When did the pain start and its nature ? 4. Does it radiate in her whole arm? 5. How is her shoulder movement?
Next Steps
Consult with a orthopaedic doctor and physiotherapist. If required, they will suggest to get X-ray.
Health Tips
1. Apply ice pack since the pain is acute. 2. Do not do any overhead activities. 3. Before resuming routine work get proper assessment or else it can lead to increase in pain. Thank you.

Shoulder pain at 47 years is common presentation. But we need other information. Since when does she have pain? Was there any injury before the onset of pain? Any diabetesthyroid problems? Any other health issues? Did she have any neck pain in the past? Does she have any other joint involvement? Are her movements at the shoulder joint full? We need to examine the patient as well. It is a little difficult to advise with so little information.
Next Steps
I would advise you to consult an orthopaedic or a shoulder specialist for a detailed assessment.

She should get an X-ray of her neck to rule out Cervical rib which usually causes pain as you have described.
Next Steps
Along with the hot water bag that you are applying also gently massage that area to release any tight muscles and ask her to try to keep her shoulders relaxed

The pain in shoulder should be the secondary cause please apply hot over her upper back and try to inform her to brace up her shoulders as possible.
Next Steps
Try Avoiding cooking with arms lifted above shoulders and leaning on the same side during sitting or getting up.
Health Tips
Always be cautious not to stretch too much when the pain is acute. Take rest for 2 days if not proceed with an X-ray to diagnose further

Whether her blood pressure is under control? How long she is having shoulder pain? Was it a gradual onset of pain or sudden onset? Does she have neck pain? Does the pain radiates from neck? Did you check her blood sugar level recently?
Next Steps
She should consult a Physician or Physiotherapist or Orthopaedist for further evaluation and treatment either in person or through video call as soon as possible.

1. Dominant or non dominant 2. Mobile use duration and how? 3. What all Domestic chores? This is stiffness of muscles around the shoulder due to overwork. Give complete rest for 2-3 days and ask her to begin with only 40-50% of the work she is making her shoulder do as of today.
