Dietary changes: Keep a food-symptom diary. Trial of lactose-free diet for 2 weeks. Reduce artificial sweeteners, caffeine, high-fat or spicy food. Consider a low-FODMAP diet under dietitian guidance. Medications (short-term relief, OTC in the USA): Loperamide (Imodium) as needed for diarrhea (not daily long-term). Simethicone for bloating. Probiotics (may help balance gut flora). Lifestyle: Regular meals, avoid skipping. Stress management (stress can worsen IBS). --- 🚨 Red Flags — Seek medical care if: Blood or mucus in stool Persistent diarrhea >4–6 weeks despite dietary adjustments Unintentional weight loss Night-time diarrhea waking you from sleep Fever, severe abdominal pain
