Chronic constipation & lower back pain

2026-09-10 13:28:36
23M. My constipation has improved and currently I am not constipated. I have regular bowel movements, especially in the morning after waking up, and the stool passes normally. However, after passing stool, I often feel like there is still something left to pass, or have a persistent urge to have another bowel movement even though nothing comes out. This happens regularly. I also still experience lower back pain, although it is much less compared to before. The pain is more noticeable when I feel the urge to pass stool but am unable to pass anything I do not have any gastric/digestive issues currently, and my digestion is otherwise good. I drink around 4 litres of water daily..

Your symptoms suggest incomplete evacuation rather than ongoing constipation. Avoid straining or repeatedly forcing a second bowel movement. Increase fibre gradually with fruits, vegetables and oats, keep fluids adequate, and walk daily. If this persists or you develop bleeding, vomiting, weight loss or severe pain, I would examine you and guide treatment—book a Practo consultation with me.

This pattern of feeling incomplete even after your constipation has improved often points to a pelvic floor or rectal evacuation issue. It's a different problem from ongoing constipation itself.
Next Steps
A gastroenterologist can evaluate this, and pelvic floor physiotherapy is worth asking about if it continues.

The feeling of needing to pass stool even after passing normally can happen with incomplete bowel emptying or irritation around the rectum. Since it is recurring and associated with back pain, consult a physician if it persists for proper examination.

Based on the symptoms you’ve described, the sensation of incomplete bowel evacuation may be associated with constipation or irregular bowel habits. Constipation can often lead to increased straining and pressure during bowel movements, which may contribute to discomfort or low backache. A personalized consultation focusing on your diet, hydration, daily routine, bowel habits, and lifestyle can help identify the underlying factors and support healthier, more regular bowel movements. Maintaining good digestive health and a balanced metabolism is an important part of overall well-being and may also help reduce associated discomfort. I would recommend a consultation to understand your individual concerns and create a personalized Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle plan suited to your needs
