When the decay is in the enamel and dentin but it's not approaching the nerves (pulp) then the tooth is fit for a normal filling. When the decay reaches your innermost layer of the tooth that's your pulp and once it gets infected then it has to be treated with a Root canal treatment which can be 4-5 times costlier than a normal filling.
