Research shows that depressed and anxious individuals have low levels of a brain neurotransmitter called serotonin, among others. Antidepressants like escitalopram work by increasing the brain levels of serotonin. Escitalopram is one of the most widely used antidepressants and is very effective in treating signs of depression.
