Advice about Rifaximin for pus cells

2024-10-07 11:01:19
Hi, I had a stool test done because of some stomach indigestion. The results said acidic stool and pus cells 5-7 hpf. I also have ibs/ lactose intolerance and had kadhi the night before. I was prescribed rifastop 200 mg 3 times a day for three days. But I'm worried it may make my already sensitive stomach even worse. What would doctors here suggest?

Please consult with your Doctor again. From your symptoms and your craving for self medication,  not having confidence in your Doctor even before starting the treatment he has suggested, it shows that the element of anxiety is very high. You should consult a Psychiatrist also because Psychological problems have a tremendous influence on IBS .

Rifaximin is commonly prescribed for IBS or bacterial overgrowth and is generally well-tolerated, even for sensitive stomachs. While mild side effects like nausea or bloating can occur, it mainly acts in the gut. To minimize discomfort, hydrate well and stick to bland foods. If symptoms worsen, consult your doctor for adjustments.

In your case, rifaximin is prescribed for gastrointestinal infections and is generally well-tolerated. However, since you have IBS and lactose intolerance, it's important to monitor your symptoms. Rifaximin should help with pus cells in the stool, which may indicate a bacterial overgrowth or infection. To minimize any potential gastric upset, I would recommend taking the medication after meals, and you might want to combine it with a proton pump inhibitor or an antacid as suggested. Avoid dairy and foods that trigger your IBS. If you notice any worsening of symptoms like severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, or nausea, please consult me for further evaluation and tailored treatment. Based on your current conditions of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and lactose intolerance, it is possible that these could be contributing factors to acidic stools. Pus in the stool is generally indicative of an infection, though it can also occasionally arise from inflammatory conditions in your digestive tract. From the information you've provided, the prescribed tablet seems to be aimed at addressing a possible diagnosis of SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth), which can further exacerbate your symptoms.
Next Steps
Rifaximin works by altering the gut bacteria, which may cause some individuals to experience mild discomfort as their digestive system adjusts. If you experience any discomfort, it's important to review your symptoms with your doctor. They may recommend additional tablets or probiotic products that help promote the growth of healthy bacteria in your gut to alleviate these effects and support overall gut health.
