Going ahead with surgery depends on how your symptoms are. If you are involved in lot of sports and need complete control then going for the surgery is advisable. If you are managing all your activities with no problems and have full control of the knee then surgery is not necessary. In addition you can have a dedicated ACL rehabilitation program to improve control and strength of the knee. If after the rehab your knee is better then no need for surgery.
Hope this helps.
