Only breastfeeding is sufficient for babies upto 6 months, provided mother has sufficient breast milk output. Poor weight gain can be due to multiple reason. Inadequate milk or inadequate sucking efforts are some of the important causes. Never to forget other medical reasons also. Since the baby was admitted in NICU, weight at discharge from NICU is important. Most newborn lose upto 10% weight initially and regain birth weight by 10 days and thereafter the weight gain is around 200grams/week in first 3 months.
Next Steps
Baby needs to be evaluated in detail for the same.

Hello there. I can understand your concern. .I completely agree with what my colleague has said here. Upto 6 months of age , mother's milk is enough. In fact, even water isn't required and shouldn't be given unless indicated. Don't worry your baby will gain weight gradually. Other things already my colleague has explained well. Best regards. Dr. Anil Kumar Jain. Bangalore.
