It sounds like your son may have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, where the body’s immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This often leads to little or no insulin production, which could explain why his blood sugar rose so high (585) without typical symptoms. Sometimes, type 1 diabetes is diagnosed after another illness, like typhoid in his case, which may have triggered an autoimmune response in his body. Type 1 diabetes, unlike type 2, cannot typically be reversed because it involves the immune system permanently damaging the insulin-producing cells. Treatment usually involves insulin therapy to manage blood sugar levels. It’s important to work closely with his doctors to ensure his insulin needs are met. While there’s no cure for type 1 diabetes currently, research is ongoing, and advancements in treatment (like artificial pancreases and more effective insulin therapies) continue to improve the quality of life for children with this condition. The typhoid illness could have been an added stressor on his immune system, which may have hastened the onset of diabetes. However, diabetes is a complex condition, and it can develop even without a clear genetic link in some cases.

Your 6-year-old son has been diagnosed with diabetes, and it is most likely Type 1 diabetes. This occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. As a result, the body is unable to produce insulin. It’s important to understand that Type 1 diabetes cannot be reversed. Your son will require insulin for life, as it is the only treatment for this condition. Following your doctor’s guidance is crucial to effectively managing his diabetes. I know this diagnosis can be shocking and difficult to accept as a parent. However, please understand that Type 1 diabetes is caused by an absolute deficiency of insulin due to an autoimmune process. With proper care, it can be managed, allowing your son to live a healthy life.
